Cover. Copulation in feral fowl, Gallus gallus domesticus. Feral fowl live in socially structured groups, and females prefer to copulate with socially dominant males. An experimental study shows that dominant males are more likely than subdominants to provide females with food (through court-ship-feeding) and reliable vigilance against predators, suggesting that the provision of these commodities may underlie female preference.
